Innovative learning tool for health and social care staff uses ‘spaced repetition’ technique to enhance retention rate of key concepts.
LONDON, UK, February 8, 2016 – Relias Learning, the global leader in online training solutions for health and social care, today announced a milestone achievement as users of their Relias Learning Management System (RLMS) reached one million BrainSpark responses within the first five months of introduction.
BrainSparks are an exciting innovation based on memory research that applies neuroscience to e-learning to help combat the forgetting curve. After completing a course, learners receive a series of brief, multiple-choice quiz questions via email, spaced over 34 days and designed to boost their long-term memory of key skills learned in the course.
The Science of Spaced Repetition
The adult learning theory behind BrainSparks is based on the idea of ‘spaced repetition’. This triggers increased memory retention by enabling the brain to recall information at key times after a concept is first learned. By reinforcing an idea, the concept and information are more likely to be put into practice – especially vital for health and social care professionals.
BrainSparks are sent to clients, free of charge, 2, 4, 6, 30, 32 and 34 days after a course is initially taken. These specific time intervals were developed based on the Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve, to help strengthen the memory through recall.
BrainSparks re-engage the learner’s memory on key topics by creating a ‘halo effect’ in the brain that improves knowledge retention and job performance. They help move knowledge from short-term memory to long-term retention where it is easier to access and apply on the job.
Dramatic Increase in Engagement
Relias clients were quick to recognise the value of BrainSparks. “We started using BrainSparks and saw a dramatic increase in learner engagement” said Greg Streuly, Training and Instructional Design Specialist for an organisation that provides services to people with physical disabilities. “It’s now commonplace for our learners to engage in meaningful conversations about the lessons well after the initial due dates.”
BrainSparks were launched in September 2016 and are available free of charge to all Relias Learning clients through the Relias Learning Management System (RLMS).
“We’ve been thrilled by the level of client adoption to BrainSparks” said Ben Johnson, Chief Product Officer of Relias Learning. “Our goal with any product innovation is to improve the quality of care our clients provide, and the rate at which they’ve embraced BrainSparks validates our efforts.”
