Blazing a trail for digital transformation in mental health
The Next Steps on the NHS Five Year Forward View, published in March, revealed that Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust is one of seven mental health Global Digital Exemplars.
NHS England explains:
“A Global Digital Exemplar will be an internationally recognised NHS care provider delivering exceptional care, efficiently, through the use of world-class digital technology and information. Exemplars will share their learning and experiences to enable other trusts to follow in their footsteps as quickly and effectively as possible … Through Global Digital Exemplars, we have an opportunity to develop leaders of this digital transformation who will eclipse the best in the rest of the world.”
Relias selected to support the GDE programme
Mersey Care has selected online training provider Relias for the part of its GED strategy to improve workforce skills and learning, and achieve cultural change in mental health services.
The Relias learning management platform will:
- streamline statutory and mandatory training, to deliver efficiencies and give staff back time that can be devoted to patient care
- introduce unique, innovative digital learning techniques including Brainsparks and PATHS to develop and enhance workforce skills
- align and support staff in achieving Mersey Care’s perfect care initiatives, by delivering custom-built courses for the organisation’s work on ‘zero suicide’ and ‘zero restraint’
- help communicate and embed Mersey Care’s ‘just culture’, which aims to meet the challenge of patient safety with openness, transparency and trust
Chief Executive of Mersey Care, Joe Rafferty, said:
“We’re delighted to be working with Relias, which we hope will provoke a revolution in systems, using digital opportunities to simplify and streamline training for staff. It’s great it will be available via mobile, tablet, PC or anywhere where there is WiFi, which gives us an opportunity to build on-line training tailored for staff. They will have ownership of the content – which uses video, audio, interactive exercises to test decision making, and even gaming technology – because training doesn’t always have to be work and can be fun.”
Managing Director of Relias UK, Deanna Roepke, added:
“Relias Learning is looking forward to creating with Mersey Care a blueprint for rapid digital progress that drives higher quality outcomes. Just like Mersey Care, Relias is a leader in its field, renowned for innovation. We share Mersey Care’s belief that digital transformation starts with people. Not only are we at the forefront of the most effective digital adult learning techniques to help staff reach their full potential, but our solution will help Mersey Care cultivate an open, learning culture that connects and aligns every member of staff to the organisation’s patient safety objectives.”
Transforming mental health outcomes
Mersey Care has already begun to transform the end-to-end patient experience in mental health through use of digital technology, and will use GDE status to accelerate its progress and disseminate best practice.
Against a backdrop of serving the most vulnerable and excluded people in society, and in a place with very high levels of digital exclusion, Mersey Care will introduce digital technologies in all aspects of mental health care, encouraging learning for local and global health systems, and demonstrating the potential of digitisation to transform mental health outcomes.
